    1.     Question: What is the purpose of this event?

      Answer: Our mission is four-fold:

To raise awareness of family violence,
To acknowledge the good work IDVOS has done for our community,
To welcome the new agency serving Vashon: DAWN (Domestic Abuse Women’s Network), and
To raise funds for DAWN to use for direct services on Vashon/Maury.

    2.   Question: What is happening?

Answer: The plan is to conduct two separate events:

Vashon Reads.” We will provide recommendations for books on the topic of family violence and ask all of Vashon including residents, book group members, and schools, to read and participate in discussions.

Book Sale.” We will ask book groups on the island to collect book donations to be sold at a community-wide sale.

    3.     Question: Hasn’t IDVOS stopped providing services to Vashon/Maury?

Answer: Island Domestic Violence Outreach Services stopped providing services 10 months ago. DAWN is taking over services on October 1st.

    4.   Question: Where will the money we raise go?

Answer: All funds raised will go to victims of domestic violence on Vashon/Maury.

    5.   Question: What is DAWN? Where are they headquartered?

Answer: DAWN has been providing services to victims of domestic violence in South King County for over 25 years.  They are headquartered in Tukwila. DAWN is pleased to be offering services to Vashon/Maury island residents.

    6.     Question: Why involve book groups? Why just women’s?

Answer: Although family violence is an issue for everyone, women have a particular stake in helping to support healthy families. Book groups link women who are engaged in the discussion of important ideas. Book group members are NOT being asked to give up book discussion time!

    7.     Question: When is this happening?

Answer: The month of October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Book recommendations will be made available to the community. We will invite individuals and book groups to read a book from this list and join in on community-wide discussions. The book sale is on Saturday, October 28 at the Firefighter’s Building.

    8.     Question: Who do I contact if I’m interested in volunteering?

Answer: Contact Nan Joy at 463-6569 or Paula Madsen at 463-3707.
